week 3

[On Sunday morning, there is a small gift waiting for the early risers in the tower: an iron key, dangling from a length of twine tied to the wooden beam across the ceiling at the cross section of the four dorms. Upon further inspection it has a particular symbol on the back half and a note that reads "Well done back there. Here's your reward. - The Alchemist". The key goes to the front doors, where there is the same symbol etched above the keyhole on the lock.

Bad news, two people are dead. :( Good news, you've gained outside privileges. :)

But even with the addition of sunshine and a not-so-safe lake, the tower is still a little quieter, the air a little heavier and the mood a lot more somber.]

...Immortality. Hm. That does always seem to be such a draw for the unimaginative.

A cowardly method for those clinging to life in desperation. [Fuck you, Demetrius.]

Very much so. Without the threat of a possible demise, what satisfaction is there even to be had?

I suppose in my own case, coming back from death was a boon of sorts, but that was a rather... peculiar case.

[just. casually drops that in there. but like we're all from anime land here, death's no biggie.]

[He raises an eyebrow a little at that, but then they're back in comfortably anime bs territory.]

Ah, one more. Was it the Alchemist's magic that brought you back? Or before?

Both. The first time I died, I woke up in a body that was not my own, despite not expecting to wake up ever again. The second time, I woke up here, presumably thanks to the Alchemist, yes. Though a part of me wonders if I can die.

...Immortality was never a goal of mine, however. Both times I would have been satisfied with my end, and yet here I am, drawing breath once again.

[It's getting kind of old, honestly. No wonder he's so blasé about the possibility of dying here.]

[Well that's uncomfortable. Nuadha gives a bit of a surprised twitch, flexing the fingers of his metal hand.]

I hadn't expected us to be in agreement on that point. It seems in any world, people use the dead for their own convenience. [But with just a little envy that might undermine how offhand he's trying to be about it:] ...Is this your own body, or the second?

It's my own. The original. It took a little work to get it back after I was so suddenly evicted... and someone else decided to move in.

[You know! As you do!]

...Ah. I can see how that would be inconvenient, if yours was still usable when you died.

[When someone leaves a perfectly good body lying around, what else do you do??]

And the occupant?

And what a surprise that was to me, when I saw people opening up the casket they buried me in, only to find nothing.

But when I tracked it down, the occupant fled rather than face me. Which made coming back home, so to speak, a much simpler endeavor.
