but if day can turn to night and darkness can turn to light
[This is certainly a morose affair. But Stella had promised Fern that she’d remember him. And… Well. They all weren’t quite as exhausted as they were last week. They may as well channel that energy into something somewhat positive.
So, Olive makes an offensively large thing of soup, that they have no chance of finishing. Bruno makes rice pudding. Baldr and Hubert also cook, which– Baldr helping is probably a good thing, on account of Hubert’s threats to poison them all.
Stella does what she can– which is providing a somber mood lighting in the great hall. At least they can gather together, without having to worry about the darkness– and without needing the torches in the Great Hall, which she has put out, fearing the flame may remind some of what happened today.
The invitations are more threatening and insulting than they have any right to be– but hey. Stella didn’t double check those. It’s probably not too difficult to guess who wrote them.
They're trying. Everyone... is trying.]

[ "Survival"... it always comes down to survival.
He turns his head so it's facing downwards right into the table again. ]
...what a joke. Here I am, having sworn to never be like them and yet I am being forced to condemn a child anyway just for my own survival. Can't even bring myself to actually do it.
I'm sure a few of my siblings would be pitching themselves into a real laughing fit if they could see for themselves. [ Or rather he means one specific one but he ain't naming her bitch ass :| ]

Being one of the only two of your kind to survive till adulthood in several thousand years tends to make you somewhat of an outlier, I find.

But more so I meant that you are... very human. The few immortal beings I've known of are so divorced from men that they have become closer to tyrants. When we first arrived in this place I was already planning your death if it came to it.
[HUBERT YOU'RE JUST GONNA ADMIT THAT???]

I'll take that as a compliment. All I've ever really wanted... was to be human.
[ He shifts and sits back up. ]
My beloved did a lot to help humanize me and the kin that have succeeded him have continued to do so. I could not even imagine treating them the way a tyrant would, not with all they have done for me.

Sometimes the deepest cruelty comes from good intentions. Let's hope you can keep that in mind.

There is a reason only me and one other sibling made it to adulthood in so long, and it wasn’t for a lack of other children before us.

cw: mass… child killing…… I have no idea what else to tag this as fjdhsgs
Hardly. My kind rarely interact or feel anything for each other anymore, much less endure rivalries.
No, it’s because the remaining adults… consider it a mercy to kill whatever new children they come across.

... is your kind's existence that horrific...?

…It might not have always been depending on who you ask. While we might have once been hunted and slain by the humans who feared and reviled us, my elder sister still spoke of those times fondly. But…
[ He tips his head back down, looking at the table ]
When Father was killed and the Allmother decided she’d had enough… when she wiped out all other life and our home world became a desolate dead wasteland that we were cursed to roam for eternity… well, I suppose I can understand a little why the other adults began to lose their minds and hearts. When they started to long for their own ends and think they were granting us a kindness by not allowing us to grow up in that world. Even if I don't quite agree.
[ After all if they had their way back then, he wouldn't be alive at all right now ]
