final investigation
[It's been almost a week since Orthrus' lucky escape. Almost a week, of all calls to Heisenberg going (metaphorically) to voicemail. Almost a week, to rest and recover from the harrowing losses of the previous Friday.
It's been almost a week. And the storms are getting worse.
You know the locked door on the first floor? The one that goes into the center of the tower, right across from the great entry hall doors?
Today, there's a heavy iron key sticking out of the lock. With a familiar crest on the head.
The key is sticky with wet yellow paint, and wetter blood.]

How does it work? ]
cw: implied body horror and gore
Meaning it talks about all the little insider tricks, like how more flesh can be combined to create a bigger monster, or how some injuries, if not addressed on the corpse, can impact the ability of the monster.
It talks about how fresher bodies create more powerful beasts, and how to tell when a corpse is too old to use.]

In fact, it's a gripping story about the mistakes that damaged people make in anger, and knowing when to let the weary rest.
Specifically, it's a human man writing about the year or so that he spent living in the courts of vampires.
It's dedicated on the front page, To Lenore, and to the parts of us that live forever in this book.]

Does it have a title? Author? ]

The title is A History of Immortality, written by an author only identified as Hector.]

Dracula, hmmm...?
[ She debates leaving the two books here, but they might end up being relevant....are they sturdy enough to travel with her? She can levitate them if she needs to. ]

Anything else to look at, or is Patchouli's horrifying library trip about done for now? ]

For the most part, these notes are very dry and scientific - the man knows how to take down objective facts.
It begins with objective observations on alchemy. Beginner level stuff, common jargon and modern "translations" of the ancient terms.
In particular, it talks about the Magnum Opus, the Rebis, and it's here that he begins to editorialize in the margins. From one entry, dated Early March, 2021
He says I need two powerful souls, one male and one female. I told him I knew exactly who I would use.
That bitch Miranda and that stupid American Ethan Winters. Stuck in one body, serving me, for the rest of time.
I like the sound of that.]

Patchouli immediately starts copying down all of these notes into her grimoire. SHE WILL STUDY THIS LATER, AT A BETTER TIME.
Anything else? ]

Had to outsource the body for the Great Work after all. Not much to be done about it when there's so many non-humans.
Today was the first motive. Meanwhile I've got Frankenstein's monster chilling out in the sub-basement until he's ready to get us to the spot where she died.
This better not take long.
More scientific entries follow, also notes about a spell to preserve a corpse that he got from Garfield. There are notes about other alchemical experiments that aren't the Magnum Opus. He seemed to have a lot of fun making something called The Vegetable Stone.
Despite the scientific way he writes out each measurement, carefully detailing the scientific process for each one, there's a certain boyish glee that comes through when he writes things like "Hypothesis: Putting the vegetable stone outside during Saturn's retrogravy will do dick all."
Dated the week before Stella's trial
He says if I can deliver on this one, he'll be ready to take me to the spot where she died.
I asked him to explain something written in his journal today, and he didn't have an answer. Figures he'd turn out to be a useless old man, after all.
Dated a few days after Stella's trial, the next entry:
One last dose of iodine in the drinking water. That ought to do it. It's just because I don't want to see her get a kill in and have no chance to escape for it. Who gives a shit about the rest of them?
What difference would it have fucking made to let her go?
There's a few lines skipped here, even though the entry cuts off abruptly. Then, it just goes into another experiment. He just keeps record of his experiments for a while, dating each one and taking notes with exact measurements.
Then, the day before the Case Six bloodbath:
Hypothesis: If the base for a rebis was used to make a night creature, it will show a heightened sentience.
And the rest of that page is ripped out.]

That. Is a lot of info, most of it concerning. She's not sure where to even start. Patchouli copies down the rest of the scientific notes, and assuming she can't find the ripped-out page, she'll finish up in here and regroup with the rest of Team Fuck Around. ]
