[On Sunday morning, there is a small gift waiting for the early risers in the tower: an iron key, dangling from a length of twine tied to the wooden beam across the ceiling at the cross section of the four dorms. Upon further inspection it has a particular symbol on the back half and a note that reads "Well done back there. Here's your reward. - The Alchemist". The key goes to the front doors, where there is the same symbol etched above the keyhole on the lock.

Bad news, two people are dead. :( Good news, you've gained outside privileges. :)

But even with the addition of sunshine and a not-so-safe lake, the tower is still a little quieter, the air a little heavier and the mood a lot more somber.]

Snakes aren't so bad. [He sits next to Bruno, leaning on the tree.]

Eh. They're fine by themselves, but they do eat rats.

[Bruno's got a soft spot for maligned animals, and snakes fit as well as rats - but the latter are the ones he actually keeps.]

Perhaps that's why Rosa doesn't like me. [Loki chuckles, waving at the tiny rodent.]

[Bruno blinks.]

What, are you part snake?

[He doesn't know Norse mythology this well, but he'd buy it]

Well, no, but it is a favorite shape of mine when causing mischief. [Loki shimmers and changes his shape. Now instead of a human looking man a moderate sized green snake sits in he grass next to Bruno.]

[Bruno blinks at this, then chuckles and leans forward to tentatively swipe at the air above the snake, where Loki previously was. Is it an illusion, or an actual shift?]

Oh, wow. My nephew Camilo - oh, I told you about him, the shape-shifter? He can only do other people, though.

[And variations, like Gargoyle Bruno, but that's still generally a human.]

[Bruno's hand doesn't meet with anything. It would seem Loki really did become a snake.

The snake flicks out his tongue, tasting the air as he bobs his head to show understanding. He raises up a bit to get a better look at Bruno.]

Do you want - wait, is it weird if I pick you up? I don't really know the rules for when a person turns into a snake, haven't really done that one before.

[Snake-Loki angles forward a bit. If Bruno has an outstretched hand he'll drape part of his body across it to signal that it is okay to pick up him up.

He won't even go 'MBLERG! IT'S ME!' and stab him!]

[Bruno picks up the snake, beaming.]

That is so neat! What a cool gift, I would have loved to do that.

[Somehow the snake looks very proud of itself.

It does slither back down onto the ground, though. Mostly so he can turn back into Loki without crushing Bruno.]

Can other people do that, or did you have to figure it out on your own? We all had to work out ours ourselves...mine was the worst, though.

True shapeshifting like this is rare, I was mostly self taught. It is an ability I showed aptitude with from a young age.

Learning to manage your visions without any help sounds very difficult.

Mmm, yeah. They'd just hit outta nowhere at first. No control at all...it was a couple years before I could even try looking for specific things.

Were you aware you had the gift before they started, or did it come with your first few visions?

[predecir]

Well, I knew I could do something. But we were all still figuring it out back then - that was the first time anybody got a gift. It happens when kids turn five, and my sisters and I are the same age, we're triplets. So on our birthday that year, these glowing doors with our names on them just appeared out of nowhere!

[He tells it like a story he doesn't remember that clearly himself. It was a long time ago, after all. But there's pictures, and of course it's been talked about a thousand times.]

Pepa's manifested right away. Her feelings affect the weather, so that's basically always happening. Julieta and I took a little longer. The carvings on the door relate to the gift, so we knew hers had something to do with food, and mine with time - it was covered in hourglasses, like these. [He tugs at the old ruana he always wears, and the hourglass embroidery on it.] But we had to experiment a little. Pepa says I spent a week trying to time travel.

[That gets a chuckle out of Loki.] It's a reasonable guess.

[Bruno laughs too. Not even one of the normal, sort of nervous ones - he's in a great mood with the sunlight and fresh air and everything.]

It's good I couldn't. The future's enough to deal with, imagine adding the past?

[He'd have probably ended up trying to save Pedro and causing a time paradox.]

[The genuine laugh makes Loki smile a bit more.]

Sounds like trouble waiting to happen. Mages are often warned to not meddle with the flow of time. Very hard to tell exactly what effects your actions will have.

I much prefer my illusions and shape shifting.

I like those. If I could've picked someone else's gift, I think it'd be that. Or Antonio's, maybe - he talks to animals.

[Not a lot of drawbacks to that, Bruno thinks. Or if there are, it's still way too early to have seen them.

It's getting dark in earnest now. Bruno doesn't much mind; he's been outside at night, since the walls, but it was never all that relaxing. Still, he's been sitting out here for hours.]

Ah, we should head in. [He clicks his tongue, calling Rosa back.] They go out on their own all the time, but I worry about her at her age - plus, we don't really know the area. Have you eaten? Wait, what time is it?

I haven't eaten since midday. [When Rosa returns, Loki offers a hand to help Bruno up.] I don't know the exact time, but I don't think being out here after dark is a good idea.

[Bruno takes the hand and pulls himself up; his weight's nothing compared to Loki's, it's like lifting a grape.]

Ay, do you think there's something out here? [now he's a little concerned!] Come on, let's go in and find some food.

I know I'd rather not take any chances.

[Despite his caution, he's in no rush to get back to the entrance of the tower. Being cooped up inside for those two weeks--and the ship before that--has made him rather appreciative of the sun on his skin.]

Do you have anything in mind?

Eh, I don't want to cook. This is the longest I've spent out in the sun for forever, I'm pretty wiped out. Sandwiches?

[cuttingremark]

Sounds good to me. [The day hadn't exactly been strenuous, but cooking is a hassle Loki would rather avoid.] Of all the things humans have invented, the sandwich is by far the most impressive.
