[On Sunday morning, there is a small gift waiting for the early risers in the tower: a dull lead key (don't lick it), dangling from a length of twine tied to the wooden beam across the ceiling at the cross section of the four dorms. Upon further inspection it has a particular symbol on the back half and a note that reads "Good job. Here's your reward". The note is signed Lord H. The key goes to sixth floor, where there is the same symbol etched above the keyhole on the lock.

The new floor is even more grand than the previous ballroom, a full theatre for their enjoyment. But it doesn't take away the burning sting of certain people who would have loved to see it.]

I was reading a book recently while looking for something more practical. Debate on the 'Great Work'... and indications that, at least in the world these books stem from, that there may be another Great Work beside the Stone. But it was written with clear assumption of the readers knowledge so... I could not deduce what the second Great Work could be.

The stone is one of the goals of alchemy. But... it's the process itself that is considered the great work. The spiritual and mental awakenings that come as a result of working through the steps and achieving enlightenment.

Perhaps he cares more for that than he does the stone.
