week 5

[On Sunday morning, there is a small gift waiting for the early risers in the tower: a shiny silver key, dangling from a length of twine tied to the wooden beam across the ceiling at the cross section of the four dorms. Upon further inspection it has a particular symbol on the back half and a note that reads "Your reward". The note is unsigned. The key goes to fifth floor, where there is the same symbol etched above the keyhole on the lock.

A chapel and a grand ballroom and all it cost was two lives and several burned bridges. But with this new area comes the boon of information: You know the Alchemist's face...and that he may have lost some of the good graces of his patron with his little stunt.]

For dancing.

[ Felix gets straight to the point, figuring...different worlds, different people. ]

Back home some nobles especially liked rooms like this to have themselves pair off one another to do exactly that.

[ It makes him think back to the White Heron Cup, of all things, though. But that was ages ago and he's definitely seen at least another ball since then. ]

Oh, really?

I've never really associated with nobles so I've never seen one... but if there's dancing is it like a festival then...?

You can compare it to something like that. But far more formal.

It's all idiotic and a waste of time all the same.

Oh...

[ He tilts his head, thinking about it ]

Well, I can't say whether I agree or not having never experienced them... though I wouldn't call any of the festivals I've seen either of those things. Perhaps they're less similar than I initially thought from the description.

I wouldn't be surprised, since we're obviously from different worlds.

But, what exactly are your festivals like?

Mmm well... in my experience every country and even every settlement have their own way of doing them that can differ wildly, but in Aeaea at least they're community affairs. Sometimes we do them to celebrate the blessings we have been given, or pay tribute to the beasts and Goddess so we may receive more blessings... but the bigger point is always to bring everyone together and strengthen our bonds.

There's almost always communal cooking of some sort like roasting things together over a bonfire or adding to a giant stew... we prepare everything together, even the decorations. Sometimes we do games or stories for the children... and there's also music and dancing - either traditional dance rituals to show respect or looser, more fun ones done with partners...

...Fodlan has its own share of festivals, one of the biggest being the Millennium Festival, so the things you've described don't sound unfamiliar.

[ Though it was not something celebrated properly, considering. ]

Are the beasts you mentioned supposed to be sacred or something?

To my people, the Beastials, they certainly are - though the rest of Rhearth often feels differently. In that world the word "beast" is applied to pure manifestations of mana - forces of nature capable of destroying and creating. They are believed to be outside of the Goddess' control and have neither hearts nor minds, they just exist as the will of the planet itself.

It is believed that a specific beast, the Beast of Life, was responsible for the creation of the forest that came to be Aeaea - that it grew out of the land where it laid to rest and rejoin with the soil. It made the forest rich in mana and magic properties, and the people and animals who eventually came to call it home reaped the benefits. Over time as a result of exposure to this beast's mana my people changed into the forms they had when I first met them, and so no longer human they called themselves the Beastials and revere beasts as well as the Goddess.

Naturally, we've nothing like that back on my world. That is, a place where people can change due to mana or magic that is in the ground. As far as I know, anyway.

And I suppose this Goddess of yours has an incredible amount of power?

[personal profile] twibeast 2022-04-27 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, she's a Goddess so I suppose she does. I never met Rhearth's but if she's anything like the Allmother then she's probably the most powerful being on her planet.
