[One week down and (if the Alchemist's promise is to be believed) just three more to go. In the past week royalty has been bullied, explicitly non-Satanic chairs were ordered and you began the pact-bonding process with your new proprietor of mercantile wares, ✨Garfield the Deals Warlock✨.

All in all, a surprisingly good week despite the kidnapping and looming threat of death. We'll see how long that lasts.

[It would be technically correct. They'd still mostly be dead, but technically correct.]

But it has been...quiet, for a very long time. I have not been among other living humans in an age; perhaps I have forgotten what it was like, myself.

[Ah. Yeah. There is that, isn't there? A few things were said during that meeting that Bruno is only just now registering, and realizing that maybe he should follow up on.]

So...are you a ghost?

I am. Why, what of it?

[shrug]

I don't know. Just never met a ghost before. I might have ghost stories, but I've never actually seen anything like that myself, ha...

[He feels like one often enough, though. He spends all his time in the house, around everyone, yet he's never really there.]

What is it like...?

[At first, it looked like he had no earthly idea how to answer that. He opened his mouth to respond before closing it again, frowning slightly.]

It is...quiet. The Lucii exist as guardians of our kingdom and bloodline, as silent observers and defenders against those who would seek to harm either. Existing in such a state is to simply exist itself, in a stagnant otherworld with faint awareness of the world of the living. To speak and interact with humans on their own level is something I have not done in many, many generations.

[Bruno cringes. This is all, perhaps, striking a little too close to home. The Madrigals aren't royalty or anything like that, far from it, but they're something like leaders to the village. They have responsibilities. Ones that are more important than anyone's personal feelings.

Bruno knows he's not the only one who found it difficult at times. He used to be close to his sisters; he's heard their troubles. But he is the only one who was too weak to shoulder his share.]

You...you were the first king?

[At this point he's honestly just fishing for something to get away from this topic.]

...I was, yes. The kingdom sought someone to unify them, and it is the calling of the Lucis Caelum bloodline to do so.

Why? Do you have special powers?

Our bloodline's magic is derived from the Crystal, and given to us by the gods as a result. It had to be someone of House Caelum that assumed the throne, and it has been ever since.

Wow, that's one way to become royalty...well, I guess it's nice that you still get to watch out for your family.

Yes, I...suppose that it is.

I haven't been able to talk to my family for...a long time now. But I stuck around. Couldn't really bring myself to leave.

[So he gets sticking around out of love and concern, which is absolutely what you and your horde of other ghosts are doing! Yes?]

I wonder…is there any truth to what he said? Do you harbor any…resentment?

No! No, no...

[Maybe sort of, deep down. But Bruno's certainly not going to acknowledge that now. He doesn't feel like he's really allowed to be angry about it anyway - not at the family, not at Mamá. He'll admit he resents the villagers, but not her.]

What happened was my fault, not hers. It's...it's a little like you said. We're not royalty, but we've got responsibilities to the town and everyone, and I...wasn't helping. That's not on her. She didn't even drive me out over it, or whatever he said, I left on my own. Some things had happened, and it was the best thing I could do for the family.
